Overview

This academic upgrading pathway prepares students for entry into trades training, both at Coast Mountain College and at other institutions. Its core courses are English 10 and Math 10, with higher-level options available, including English 11 and 12, Math 11, provincial-level math, and physics, for students aiming at trades programmes with steeper academic requirements; the college notes, for example, that its own Electrical Foundation programme requires Math 11. The pathway is delivered as individual upgrading courses selected according to a student's target trade and current academic level rather than as a fixed-length cohort programme, and specific term length and intake are arranged through advising rather than published in advance. Students apply through EducationPlannerBC and then work with an Educational Advisor to discuss goals, funding, and course placement before registering. The pathway suits students who have not completed the necessary high-school-level English and math for their chosen trades programme, including those still deciding which trade to pursue and who would benefit from advisor guidance.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: The Pre-Trades Pathway sets ENGL 030 (English 10) and MATH 0301/0302 (Math 10) as the baseline prerequisites for entry to CMTN's trades programs, with the full course-specific prerequisite list published on each trades program's own page; the Electrical Foundation stream instead requires MATH 0401/0402 (Math 11). Applicants working toward an Adult Graduation Diploma as a pathway into trades elsewhere are pointed to ENGL 030/040/050 (English 10-12), MATH 0301/0302, 0401/0402 and 0501/0502, and PHYS 040. The program page states no English-language test requirement; per Coast Mountain College's general admissions page, English proficiency is required of every applicant regardless of citizenship, met by senior secondary graduation with English 12 in an English-speaking country or an approved test (IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic, CAEL, or Duolingo English Test). Applicants apply through Education Planner BC, then meet an advisor for course placement and registration.

Application Details

Application Deadline: Coast Mountain College runs one common application calendar across its campuses rather than a single date per programme. Domestic applicants: for the 2026-27 academic year, applications opened 1 October 2026; the final day to apply is 24 December 2026 for Winter (January 2027) entry, 23 April 2027 for Spring/Summer 2027, and 30 August 2027 for Fall 2027. International applicants share the same opening date but face earlier cut-offs: 1 October 2026 for Winter, 1 February 2027 for Spring/Summer, and 1 June 2027 for Fall, and some high-demand programmes may close sooner. Trades and other varying-start programmes are judged against their own start dates (international due three months, domestic one week, before start), and continuous-intake programmes accept applications year-round. No single closing date exists beyond these cut-offs. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
