Overview
This program will provide students with the necessary knowledge and confidence to successfully work as a nursing unit assistant (NUA) in a vast array of nursing units and clinical settings. NUAs strongly contribute to overall patient care in many settings and must possess a keen eye for detail and excellent communication skills to help facilitate the successful functioning of a nursing unit.
Through both lecture and a supported practicum placement, you will learn different types of physician's orders, policies, ethical standards and duties that encompass the NUA role. Nursing unit assistants work in many areas in healthcare such as outpatient settings, inpatient units and clinics.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission to the Nursing Unit Assistant Certificate requires high school graduation or equivalent, English 12, English First Peoples 12, ENGL 050 or 051 (minimum C), or equivalent, and an invigilated typing assessment of 35 net words per minute at an approved testing centre. Once accepted, students must complete the Student Practice Education Core Orientation checklist, obtain a provincial Schedule B criminal record search (RCMP checks are not accepted, given the practicum's work with vulnerable people), and provide proof of immunization per BC practice-education and health-authority guidelines; failure to meet the immunization requirement can prevent completion of the programme. A $720 seat deposit is required on acceptance, and the programme is not eligible for StudentAid BC loan funding. The programme page does not set its own English-language proficiency scores; non-native English speakers must meet CNC's institution-wide requirement, published on its admission-requirements page: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT overall 80 (no section below 17), PTE Academic overall 59 (no section below 55), CAEL overall 60+ (no subtest below 60), CELPIP General with no section below 7, or Duolingo English Test overall 110, scores valid two years.

Application Deadline:College of New Caledonia runs first-qualified, first-accepted admissions with no single deadline for most programmes. Domestic and international applicants use the same process, though international students also go through CNC's international application page: applications for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 entry are open now, and applications for Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 entry open on 1 October 2026.
