Overview

The Industrial Mechanic (Millwright)/Machinist Foundation is an in-class certificate program at College of New Caledonia, offered at the Prince George, Quesnel and Vanderhoof campuses, that introduces entry-level industrial mechanical skills through roughly equal amounts of classroom instruction and shop-based practical training. Students learn safe work practices, lubrication systems and components, anchoring, levelling and grouting, coupling and shaft alignment, mechanical drawings and specifications, layout and fabrication, welding, rigging, hoisting and lifting, hydraulic systems, and pump maintenance and operation. The program does not require an employer sponsor beforehand, preparing students for the apprenticeship pathway in either the Industrial Mechanic (Millwright) or Machinist trade and giving them a competitive advantage when later seeking an apprenticeship placement. On completion, students receive credit with SkilledTradesBC for Level 1 technical training in both trades, allowing them to progress to apprenticeship registration. Admission requires English Language Arts 10 at a minimum "C" and either Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 or Workplace Mathematics 11 at a minimum "C", or equivalents; high school students may access the program through the Career Technical Centre option. It suits individuals interested in understanding how industrial machinery operates who want hands-on preparation before committing to a specific employer-sponsored apprenticeship in millwright or machinist work.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: No employer sponsor is needed to enter this foundation program. Entry requires a minimum "C" grade in English Language Arts 10 (or equivalent) and a minimum "C" grade in either Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 or Workplace Mathematics 11 (or equivalent); the program page notes these are minimum requirements. Applicants who do not meet them can pursue CNC's Academic Upgrading options, and high school students may be able to take the program through the CTC dual-credit option via their school counsellor. The program page states no English-language test score of its own; per CNC's institution-wide admission requirements, international applicants must instead meet the college's general English Language Proficiency Requirement — IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 4.0 with no section below 4.0, PTE Academic overall 59 with no section below 55, CAEL overall 60+ with no subtest below 60, CELPIP General with no section below 7, or Duolingo English Test overall 115 (valid 2 years) — applying through EducationPlannerBC. Admission is limited and first-qualified, first-accepted.

Application Details

Start Date: Spring and Fall
Application Deadline: College of New Caledonia runs first-qualified, first-accepted admissions with no single deadline for most programmes. Domestic and international applicants use the same process, though international students also go through CNC's international application page: applications for Fall 2026 and Spring 2027 entry are open now, and applications for Fall 2027 and Spring 2028 entry open on 1 October 2026. Seats are assessed on a rolling basis and close once a programme fills or the term begins; CNC advises applying as soon as applications open, and international applicants typically get an offer letter within four to six weeks. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Northern Collaborative Baccalaureate Nursing Program) and the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Diploma are exceptions, each carrying a fixed 1 March application-and-documentation deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
