Overview
The Electrical Construction and Maintenance Apprenticeship program delivers the in-school technical training for apprentices working toward certification as an Electrician - Construction and Maintenance (309A) in Ontario, structured into four common-core levels. Level 1 covers communication and documentation, an introduction to the Canadian Electrical Code, trade practices, and electrical fundamentals. Level 2 adds electrical systems, electronic fundamentals, intermediate motor controls and devices, and communication and monitoring systems. Level 3 introduces renewable energy generating and storage systems, PLC fundamentals, power electronics, and instrumentation. Level 4, specific to the construction stream, covers building automation systems, professionalism and ethics, power conditioning systems, advanced motors and generators, high-voltage service and operation, and specialty installations. Each level combines theoretical instruction with practical skills training. Apprentices alternate in-school levels with employer-based on-the-job training and need an employer sponsor and a registered Training Agreement with Skilled Trades Ontario. The program is delivered part-time and in person at the Thunder Bay campus.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age (16 in limited cases), have legal permission to work in Canada with a valid Social Insurance Number, and meet the trade's educational requirement, generally Grade 12 or equivalent, though some sponsors accept Grade 10 or equivalent. Applicants need an employer sponsor located in Ontario, which may be a private employer, association, or union, and apply for the apprenticeship through Skilled Trades Ontario once an offer of employment has been received. The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development then drafts a Registered Training Agreement, signed by the apprentice and sponsor, before in-school training begins. This program is not currently available to international students, who would additionally need a valid Social Insurance Number and an employer sponsor to enter an apprenticeship.
