Overview
The Welding Apprenticeship (Trade Code 456A) prepares students to perform welding, cutting, and metal-fabrication tasks to industry standards. Delivered on campus at the Thunder Bay campus, the program combines in-school instruction, structured across three levels, with on-the-job training under a sponsoring employer, totalling 720 in-school hours and 5,280 on-the-job hours over the apprenticeship term. Coursework covers welding theory and metallurgy, blueprint reading and welding symbols, and practice in Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Submerged Arc Welding (SAW), and Plasma Arc Welding (PAW), along with thermal cutting, fitting and fabrication, and quality inspection. Safety training and use of personal protective equipment are taught throughout all three levels. The apprenticeship is open to new apprentices and to experienced tradespersons through a Trade Equivalency Assessment. Graduates who complete all levels and pass the required assessments earn a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement, a credential recognized for employment in construction, manufacturing, and industrial maintenance across Canada.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: To be eligible for this apprenticeship, applicants must be at least 18 years of age (16 in limited cases), have legal permission to work in Canada, and meet the trade's educational requirements — Grade 12 or equivalent is the generally accepted standard, though Grade 10 or equivalent may be accepted by some sponsors. Applicants must have a sponsor located in Ontario (a private employer, association, or union) and apply for the apprenticeship through Skilled Trades Ontario, typically after receiving an offer of employment from a sponsor. This program is not currently open to international students.
