Cert in English Studies Program

This is an English-language pathway program, without a formal credential of its own, intended to build the language skills students need before starting academic study in English. It is organized into four progressive levels: Beginner, which covers foundational skills; Intermediate, which builds reading comprehension and grammatical accuracy; Advanced, which prepares students for secondary-level coursework with an emphasis on fluent communication and essay writing; and University Preparation, which targets the skills needed for post-secondary academic success. Writing and reading components are required at every level, and at the Intermediate and Advanced levels students also choose two elective courses from four options that integrate writing, reading, listening, and speaking around specific topics. The program suits international students and others who need to strengthen their English proficiency, and many students complete it before moving into Coquitlam College's High School or University Transfer programs.
