Overview
The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) is designed for expert English speakers who already hold an undergraduate degree and want to teach ESL overseas or in private language schools; it does not lead to provincial teacher certification. The 30-credit certificate normally takes one year to complete and is delivered through evening courses, allowing students to study part-time while working during the day, at the Sir George Williams campus. Admission requires a program-specific application, a 45-minute English Composition Placement Test with a satisfactory grade, and reference or assessment forms, in addition to holding a first university degree with a strong academic record. The program has historically admitted for the Fall term only, with an application deadline of March 1 (February 1 for U.S. and international applicants); admission to the certificate is currently suspended.
