The Certificate in English Literature and Linguistics at Université Laval develops advanced English-language proficiency alongside the study of literatures from English-speaking regions, including Canada, the United States, Britain, Ireland, and postcolonial areas of Africa, South Asia, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand. The 30-credit programme is designed for full-time completion in about one year, though part-time study is possible, and up to 15 credits of prior learning may be recognized. Core coursework in critical writing is combined with elective courses in linguistics, English grammar, and literature surveys spanning several regions and literary traditions. Some courses are offered in distance or hybrid format. The certificate admits students in the Fall term only. Quebec DEC holders may apply directly, or with a standardized English placement test where required; exemptions apply to those who completed secondary studies in English or an English DEC with required coursework. Non-francophone applicants must also meet the university's French-language requirement.
