BA/BS in Environmental Science

Environmental Science at Dalhousie University leads to a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Arts, delivered jointly by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with study at the Halifax campus and, in part, at Truro and Bible Hill, admitting students in September and January. The program approaches environmental problems from multiple angles, combining scientific methods with environmental law, economics, and history to examine sustainability issues and potential solutions. Students can complete the degree as a concentrated or combined honours, a major or double major, or a minor, and may add a co-op stream consisting of three work terms integrated with academic study. Optional certificates cover areas such as aquaculture and the environment, environmental impact assessment, and geographic information science, and an integrated science program offers an alternative first-year entry route. Learning includes field schools, internships, and research opportunities alongside coursework, with the first two years covering environmental science fundamentals, geospatial technology, chemistry, and statistics, and later years addressing environmental law, impact assessment, and analytics through to a capstone course. The BSc track requires pre-calculus mathematics and a higher admission average than the BA track. Graduates move into roles such as environmental consultant or natural resource and conservation manager, and some continue into graduate programs such as a Master of Resource and Environmental Management.
