Overview

Applied Ecology examines how ecosystems function and how their living and non-living components interact, applying systems thinking to the management of ecosystems for agriculture, forestry, fisheries, protected areas and urban development. Students build foundational understanding of ecosystem processes and the tools used to address problems such as pollution, over-harvesting, acid rain and climate change that arise from mismanagement. Coursework includes Population and Community Ecology, Ecosystem Management, Assessing Environmental Impact and GIS for Natural Resource Management. Offered as a specialization or a minor, the specialization must be combined with a major within the Bachelor of Science (Agricultural and Environmental Sciences), with Environmental Biology suggested, and is offered by the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. Complementary minors include Ecological Agriculture, Environment, Environmental Engineering and International Development. Graduates pursue careers such as policy advisor, field researcher, museum curator and ecological educator, including environmental impact assessment and conservation-related work.
