Program details

Overview

Microbiology and Immunology at Dalhousie University leads to a Bachelor of Science, offered by the Faculty of Science, with study at the Halifax campus and, in part, at Truro and Bible Hill, and entry in September or January. The program examines microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, and parasites, alongside how the immune system responds to them, covering bacteriology, virology, immunology, microbial genetics, and bacterial pathogenesis. Students enter the Faculty of Science as undeclared majors and formally declare the program at the end of first year, then complete it as a concentrated or combined honours, a major or double major, or a minor. A co-op option built around three paid work terms is available, along with study-abroad opportunities and certificates in areas such as genetics, human physiology, or science communication and leadership. Coursework moves from foundational first-year science into topics such as the molecular mechanisms of cancer and host-pathogen interactions in later years. Graduates pursue roles such as microbiologist, geneticist, public health inspector, or pathologist, working in biomedical and environmental research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or vaccine development, and some continue into graduate study, such as a Master of Science in pharmacology or biochemistry and molecular biology, or into medicine. The program suits students interested in the biological basis of infection and immunity who want a lab-based science degree with room to specialize.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 75.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants complete Grade 12 with a minimum overall average of 75% across five academic Grade 12 courses: Academic English 12, Pre-calculus Math 12 and three further academic subjects; students enter the Faculty of Science as undeclared majors and formally declare Microbiology and Immunology at the end of first year, and Dalhousie offers UPrep courses for applicants missing a prerequisite. Admission is competitive, so meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a seat. The page states no program-specific language-test scores and defers to Dalhousie's general English-language requirement for applicants whose first language is not English: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90 overall with no section below 20, Pearson PTE Academic 61 overall with no skill below 50, or Duolingo English Test 120, among other accepted tests and exemptions listed on Dalhousie's international-admissions pages. Microbiology and Immunology admits students for September and January entry.

Application Details

Start Date: September and January
Application Deadline: Dalhousie's live Dates and Deadlines page still shows the September 2026 entry cycle as of mid-September 2026, not the 2027 cycle. For that cycle, Bachelor of Science (Nursing), Bachelor of Health Sciences, Bachelor of Science (Medical Sciences) and Bachelor of Social Work close February 15, 2026; the Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies (Architecture) closes March 1, 2026; and the Health Sciences post-diploma option closes June 15, 2026. All other undergraduate programmes are considered on a rolling, space-available basis for both domestic and international applicants, with no separate international closing date published; May 15, 2026 is only the deposit and English-proficiency deadline, not an application deadline. Dalhousie has not yet published September 2027 entry dates. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
