The History Associate Degree at Douglas College is a two-year, 60-credit, four-semester credential examining the social worlds, economies, cultures, patterns of thought, and politics of people in their historical context. Coursework develops critical-thinking, writing, research, and presentation skills, along with the ability to construct historical arguments, evaluate and interpret historical evidence, analyze historical problems, and participate in informed historical debate, including how history is created, preserved, and disseminated through public memory and commemoration. The credential may fulfil some lower-division prerequisites for a Bachelor of Arts degree in related disciplines, as well as some prerequisites for teacher education programs. An optional Co-operative Education stream allows students to alternate semesters of study with paid, full-time work terms; participation requires planning two semesters in advance through the Co-op Office. A tuition-free, six-week online preparatory course, MATU 0500 Set for Stats, is available for students refreshing mathematics skills before the required statistics course. Courses selected according to the BC Transfer Guide allow graduates to enter the third year of a four-year bachelor's degree program at British Columbia research universities such as SFU, UBC, and UVic. Admission follows Open Enrolment under the college's General College Admission Requirements.
