Overview
This structured theoretical and practicum-based certificate is designed for health care and human service professionals, paramedics, firefighters and other first responders who care for individuals and families experiencing mental health crises and emergencies. Coursework covers the legislation shaping emergency mental health practice and the provincial services and resources available, crisis theory and models of practice, the factors behind triaging emergency mental health calls, advanced psychiatric interviewing and communication, comprehensive mental health and risk assessment, DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for mental health and substance use disorders, and assessment, intervention and treatment strategies including related physiological disorders. It also addresses interdisciplinary and interprofessional practice, professional standards and ethics, safe working environments, clinical and workplace stress and techniques to reduce it, trauma- and violence-informed recovery-oriented care, and the principles of Truth and Reconciliation, cultural humility, equity, diversity and inclusion. The credential comprises a framework for practice course, a clinical and diagnostic concepts course, and a practicum.
