Douglas College offers this non-credit credential to people building the groundwork for front-line work in mental health recovery, particularly inside recovery-oriented organisations. Everything in it — the philosophy taught, the principles behind that philosophy, and the practice modelled — is anchored in Psychosocial Rehabilitation, a holistic approach in which the person, and not the diagnosis, sits at the centre of any intervention. A graduate can set out how care is delivered across British Columbia and the values underpinning it, name the disorders that make up serious and persistent mental illness, reflect critically on PSR as theory, philosophy and applied practice, point to the ways services actually put PSR to work, describe the methods that support someone's recovery, and identify the competencies the practice demands. Two courses build the credential — Introduction to Mental Health (MHCP 201) and Psychosocial Rehabilitation (MHCP 203) — and either may be taken on its own where the prerequisites are satisfied. Admission rests on English 12 at a minimum grade of C, or an approved equivalent. It stands apart from the for-credit Community Mental Health Worker Program rather than acting as a slower route through it, and finishing it grants no advanced placement toward that credential. The B.C. Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry does not accept it as a basis for listing.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires proof of completion of English 12 with a minimum grade of C, or proof of an equivalent as detailed on Douglas College's general admissions page. Health-care workers with current experience and a documented knowledge base in mental-health disorders, the mental-health system, best practices in mental-health reform, and person-centred practice may request to skip the program's introductory course, MHCP 201, by submitting a detailed letter listing their relevant healthcare experience and education; the Psychosocial Rehabilitation instructor assesses this request, and applicants who are granted the skip are not eligible to receive the program certificate. To apply, applicants contact the CMH Program Assistant directly by email; no minimum GPA, interview, or portfolio is stated.
Application Details
Application Deadline:Douglas College publishes college-wide application windows rather than a single date for every programme, and the domestic and international timetables differ. Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC: for the 2027 entry cycle, Fall applications open 1 October 2026, Winter applications open 1 February 2026, and Summer applications open 1 June 2026; limited-enrolment programmes set no fixed close and shut once seats fill, while open-enrolment programmes stay open until 4:00 p.m. the Friday before the semester starts. International applicants apply directly to Douglas: Fall 2026 entry is now closed, Winter 2027 entry is accepted until 30 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry until 31 January 2027. Admission is effectively rolling within each window until seats or the deadline are reached. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
