Overview

The diploma builds the range of skill needed for entry-level work as an electrical engineering technician under the supervision of a qualified person. Coursework covers measuring temperature, pressure, flow and level, along with installation methods, wiring systems and applying relevant codes, standards and best practice. Possible destinations include instrumentation technician or apprentice electrician roles, and the Working at Heights training required by the Ministry of Labour can be completed as part of the program.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or Mature Student Status, plus English at Grade 12 (C or U) and mathematics at Grade 12 (C, M or U). Technical mathematics is recommended, as are physics and chemistry taken at Grade 11 or 12. Durham lists this among the programs it expects to be highly competitive, so applicants who are complete by the equal-consideration date get ranked on an average of four senior-level prerequisite subjects (Grade 11 or 12 at the C, M or U level), and the marks needed in practice sit above these published minimums.

Application Details

Start Date: Two intakes a year - September and January. Current cycle class starts: 8 September 2026 and 11 January 2027.

Application Deadline: Domestic (apply at ontariocolleges.ca): equal-consideration date 1 February 2026 for September 2026 entry and 1 October 2026 for January 2027 entry - Durham's standing rule is 1 February for a September start and 1 October for a January start. Applications completed after the equal-consideration date are still accepted and assessed while seats remain. International: apply through Durham College's own international application, not ontariocolleges.ca; Durham publishes no general international closing date and directs applicants to the Intakes and Availability table on the program page. This program is on Durham's list of programs anticipated to be highly competitive: qualified applicants complete by the equal-consideration date are ranked on the average of four senior-level (Grade 11 or 12, C, M or U) prerequisite subjects.
