Overview

Coursework encourages self-reflective practice, examining personal beliefs, values, attitudes and assumptions that shape human behaviour and relationships. Students build critical-thinking skill applicable to assessment, intervention planning and evaluation across different care settings, with faculty support for developing communication technique, counselling theory and practice.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma, or Mature Student Status for applicants aged 19 or over without one, plus Grade 12 English at the C or U level with a minimum final grade of 60 per cent. International and non-native-English-speaking applicants must also meet Durham College's general English Language Proficiency Policy: IELTS Academic 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 88 with no section below 22, PTE Academic 53 with no section below 49, CAEL 60 overall, or Duolingo English Test 110. Before starting the program's field placement, students must independently obtain, at their own expense, a clear criminal reference check with vulnerable-sector screening, current Level C CPR and standard first-aid certification, a completed entry immunization form, and verification through the college's Electronic Student Permit Checking service; placement agencies may require further background checks.
