Program details
Overview
This PhD programme develops advanced research and analytical skills in civil engineering, preparing graduates for careers in scientific research, industry, and university teaching. Students deepen their expertise in a chosen specialization, critically evaluate the scientific literature, and develop rigorous methods of reasoning and experimentation under the direction of a research supervisor. The programme comprises 90 credits: a minimum of 15 credits of graduate coursework and 75 credits of thesis research, culminating in a doctoral thesis. Admission requires holding a bachelor's or master's degree from Polytechnique Montréal, or an equivalent diploma, a strong academic record, and the support of a professor who agrees to supervise the candidate's research; a strong academic record alone does not guarantee admission. Candidates who already hold a graduate diploma may be granted an exemption from all or part of the required coursework credits. Instruction is delivered in French. New students are admitted in the fall, winter, and summer terms. The credential awarded is a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).
