Overview
The PhD in Materials Engineering at Polytechnique Montreal develops advanced knowledge, scientific rigour, and research skills for candidates pursuing careers in materials characterization, design, and fabrication. The programme deepens understanding of the physico-chemical, mechanical, and microstructural properties of materials, with particular attention to functional properties and forming processes. Students specialize in one of five research axes: energy, transport, biomaterials, electronics and telecommunications, or metallurgy. Coursework builds the ability to evaluate scientific literature and apply rigorous methods of reasoning and experimentation, while the research component lets candidates advance knowledge in their chosen specialty. The programme totals 90 credits: a minimum of 15 credits of graduate coursework, including at least 9 credits of core courses providing a general grounding in materials engineering, and 75 credits of research leading to a doctoral thesis. Graduates receive the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.).
Requirements
Admission Requirements: To be admitted to a doctoral program, candidates must hold a bachelor's or master's degree from Polytechnique Montreal or a recognized equivalent, have a strong academic record, and secure the agreement of a professor willing to supervise the research. A strong academic record alone does not guarantee admission to the program; the candidate must also obtain a professor's commitment to supervise the thesis.
