Overview

This research-based master's program in materials engineering at Polytechnique Montréal deepens technological and scientific knowledge of the physico-chemical, mechanical, and microstructural characteristics of materials, with emphasis on functional properties and forming processes. Students specialize along one of five axes: energy, transportation, biomaterials, electronics/telecommunications, or metallurgy. The 45-credit program includes at least 9 credits of mandatory base courses (plus further elective coursework, 15 credits total) alongside a mandatory research seminar, and 30 credits for research and thesis writing. Before applying, candidates must secure a faculty member willing to supervise their research. Graduates receive the Maîtrise ès sciences appliquées (M.Sc.A.) degree. Coursework is delivered primarily during the day on campus at Polytechnique Montréal in Montreal, Quebec. The program suits holders of an engineering degree, or a related science degree judged relevant by the institution, who want supervised research training in materials design, characterization, or fabrication.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 2.75 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: To be admitted to a research master's program, applicants must hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or a relevant discipline, or a university degree of a scientific nature deemed relevant by Polytechnique Montréal, and must have a minimum cumulative average of 2.75/4.0 (or 3.0/4.3, or the recognized equivalent); candidates who do not meet this average may request a waiver by presenting a file demonstrating their aptitude for master's-level study (relevant professional experience, further studies since the university degree, etc.). Applicants to the research profile must also obtain the support of a professor who agrees to supervise their research; contacting professors working in the field of interest before applying is strongly recommended. Meeting these general conditions does not guarantee admission, since the application must also meet any particular conditions set by the program. A recognized language test result, in English or French, is mandatory for the application to be considered.
