Overview
The Solar Panel Installer program is a 14-week, part-time certificate delivered fully online as distance education, leading to a George Brown College certificate. It introduces the fundamentals of solar photovoltaic (PV) installation for residential and commercial projects, focusing on the practical aspects of sizing and installing solar PV systems, and is designed for students with little or no background in electricity or electronics. Circuit theory is integrated with laboratory simulation using CircuitLogix software (2D and 3D), which models batteries, battery banks, converters, inverters, automatic transfer switches, solar arrays and other components used in solar power generation and storage. The program is presented in 7 modules of text, animations, audio lectures, illustrations, review questions and practice exams, with more than 50 pre-built lab projects, and each module ends with an online exam. Enrolment is open year-round with no fixed completion schedule, though average part-time completion takes about 14 weeks. Graduates who complete the program are exempted from 7 modules of the Solar Energy Technician program, and are prepared for roles such as solar PV installer, solar PV technician and solar PV sales representative.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The academic prerequisite for students entering the Solar Panel Installer program is an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (with credits at or above the general level) or equivalent, or mature student status. If you are 19 years or older and do not have a high school diploma, you may enrol as a mature student.
