This PhD in Administration – Financial Engineering is offered by HEC Montréal jointly with Concordia University, McGill University and the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), and includes mathematics courses recognized by the Institut des sciences mathématiques (ISM). The 90-credit, full-time program combines coursework and specialization seminars with a thesis, and can be completed in four to five years. Classes are held on-site at the Côte-des-Neiges campus. Research areas include credit risk, derivatives pricing, dynamic optimization, energy markets, high-frequency data, machine learning, risk management and stochastic control, with students publishing in journals such as the Review of Financial Studies and the Journal of Banking and Finance. Students have access to research infrastructure including the National Bank Capital Markets trading room, the Computing and Data Mining Laboratory, and databases such as CRSP, Compustat and WRDS. Tuition fees are waived for the first four years of full-time study, with competitive funding available. Around 40% of graduates from 2006 to 2022 hold professor positions in Canada or the US, and around 60% work as executives or consultants for firms such as Deloitte, KPMG and PSP Investments.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a Master of Science (MSc), Master of Business Administration (MBA), or another graduate degree in a related field, with an average the School deems excellent across all years of university study. Submitting GRE, TAGE MAGE, or GMAT scores is optional but recommended. An advanced level of English or French is required, demonstrated through prior education or by passing a language test or completing an advanced-level language program. Admission is offered for the Fall term only, with applications due no later than January 5. Students still completing a master's program may apply, conditional on receiving their degree before the doctoral program begins, in late August.
