Program details

Overview

Histoire et civilisation is the French title John Abbott's own site uses for its Liberal Arts program, an honours-level, two-year pre-university DEC tracing Western culture and civilization from Ancient Greece and Rome to the modern period. The program page describes coursework in history, philosophy, literature, and art, with students pre-registered together into four reserved classes each semester so the same cohort studies as a close-knit group throughout the program. It states Liberal Arts offers a wider range of option courses than any other program at the college, letting students branch into subjects such as psychology, business, science, ceramics, photography, or a new language while completing an extensive independent research project of their choosing. Admission carries a specific secondary-school mathematics prerequisite, the Cultural, Social and Technical option. The page frames the program as building transferable skills in critical thinking, reading, and written and oral communication, and cites graduates who went on to study at universities including Queen's, the University of Toronto, and the American University in Paris. It suits students who are passionate about ideas, history, and literature, want a small, discussion-driven learning community, and are drawn to an interdisciplinary humanities education rather than a single-subject focus.
