Overview

The Double DEC: Science & Social Science program lets students complete both of John Abbott's principal pre-university streams at once, over a three-year commitment rather than the usual two. According to the program page, Double DEC students take the same core courses as students enrolled separately in the regular Science and regular Social Science programs, rather than a reduced or blended curriculum, which keeps university options open across both science-based and social-science-based fields. The page lists the social science elective areas available within the combined program, including anthropology, business, classics, economics, geography, history, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, alongside the standard science and mathematics course load. Student testimonials quoted on the page describe the program as suited to those who are unsure which direction to pursue after high school and want extra time and breadth before committing to a university path. It suits motivated students willing to take on a heavier three-year course load in exchange for maximum flexibility, keeping doors open to science, health, and social-science-related university programs rather than narrowing their options after only two years of CEGEP.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Applicants need a Diplôme d'Études Secondaires including Secondary 5 Language of Instruction, Secondary 5 Second Language, Secondary 4 Mathematics, Secondary 4 Science and Technology (or Applied Science and Technology), and Secondary 4 History and Citizenship Education, or a Secondary School Vocational Diploma with Secondary 5 Language of Instruction, Secondary 5 Second Language and Secondary 4 Mathematics, or education the College deems equivalent. This Double DEC shares the Science program's prerequisites: Secondary V Chemistry, Secondary V Physics, and Secondary V Mathematics Technical & Scientific Option or Science Option. English is John Abbott's language of instruction; the College does not publish a separate IELTS/TOEFL minimum for general admission, and international applicants' academic credentials are instead assessed against their own country of study through SRAM's international admission service. Students assessed at French level 2 or below may need three supplementary French courses and should contact the program coordinator before applying. Prerequisites older than five years require Admissions Office consultation. Applications go through SRAM (code 200.12) by March 1 for Fall or November 1 for Winter entry.
