Overview

The Governance and Civil Studies Diploma is a two-year, four-term Keyano College credential that prepares students to understand and engage with systems of governance, politics and civil society. The interdisciplinary curriculum draws on political science, sociology, history, English and philosophy, with particular emphasis on Canadian and Indigenous perspectives. The diploma can also be completed on a part-time basis and is delivered in-person at Keyano College's Clearwater Campus in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Credits are recognized for transfer to other Alberta post-secondary institutions through the Alberta Transfer Guide. Admission requires an Alberta high-school diploma with a minimum grade in English 30-1, together with a minimum grade in Social Studies 30-1 or a higher minimum in Social Studies 30-2, with the same requirements applying to mature applicants aged 21 and older. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet the college's English-language-proficiency requirement before admission.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission to the Governance and Civil Studies Diploma requires an Alberta high-school diploma or equivalent with a minimum of 50% in English 30-1, together with either a minimum of 50% in Social Studies 30-1 or a minimum of 75% in Social Studies 30-2. Mature applicants aged 21 or older must meet the same requirements. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Keyano College's English-language-proficiency requirement, met through TOEFL iBT (minimum 79, no score below 19), IELTS Academic (minimum 6.5, no band below 5.0), CAEL (minimum 70), Duolingo English Test (minimum 115) or PTE Academic (minimum 58), or by presenting six or more years of full-time education, including grade 12 or higher, completed in English.
