Bachelor of Social Work is a bachelor's degree in Social Work programme taught at MacEwan University in Edmonton, Canada. The programme runs for 2 years. Tuition for international students is CAD 941 per credit (CAD 214 per credit for local students).
The Bachelor of Social Work at MacEwan University is a completion degree, meaning it builds on prior post-secondary education rather than starting from a blank slate. Admission is available through two routes: a post-diploma pathway for graduates of MacEwan's own Social Work diploma or an accredited Alberta Social Work diploma, and a university credit transfer pathway for applicants who have completed 60 university-level credits. The curriculum examines how social, environmental, and economic issues interconnect, with particular attention to sustainability and Indigenous social work practice, and students complete practicum placements in professional settings as part of their training. The program is offered at MacEwan University's main campus in Edmonton. It prepares graduates for work in health, mental health, child and family, and other community and human service settings, and is aimed at students who have already completed a relevant diploma or substantial university coursework and who intend to become registered social workers. The program's completion-degree structure makes it suited to those continuing from an existing credential rather than students beginning post-secondary study for the first time.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:2.50 / 4.0
Admission Requirements: Admission follows two tracks rather than a direct-entry Grade 12 route: applicants with an Alberta-accredited Social Work Diploma need a minimum Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale, while transfer applicants need 57 non-social-work university-level credits including three credits of English, six credits of anthropology, political science, psychology or sociology, and SOWK 240 (Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare) or its equivalent at a minimum grade of C-, at the same 2.5 AGPA. Up to 15% of seats are reserved for Indigenous applicants who still meet the minimum program requirements. All applicants must meet MacEwan's institution-wide English Language Proficiency Requirement (MacEwan.ca/elp); the program's own page states no separate score table. Admitted applicants must submit a clear Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search, issued within three months of program start, plus an Alberta Intervention Record Check or provincial equivalent.
