The Chemical Engineering PhD at McMaster builds on a Master of Applied Science degree with research-intensive study in a chosen specialty area. Students complete coursework to strengthen technical understanding and carry out a doctoral dissertation under faculty supervision, working toward a novel contribution to scientific knowledge that is disseminated through scholarly publications and participation in the academic process. Research areas include biomaterials and bioprocessing, such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and bioseparations; polymer science and engineering; process systems engineering and control; and materials and process modelling and computation, covering topics such as molecular modelling, computational fluid dynamics, and energy systems. The program is thesis-based, offered on both full-time and part-time bases, and normally takes four years to complete. McMaster admits students for September, January, and May starts, each with separate application deadlines for domestic and international applicants.
