Overview
The MSc in Chemistry is a research-intensive, thesis-based graduate program spanning analytical and environmental, biological, inorganic, materials, organic, physical and theoretical chemistry. The program aims to produce high-calibre researchers and world-class research output through hands-on personal mentorship, access to advanced instrumentation and research facilities, and a collegial research environment. Students conduct original supervised research, working closely with faculty mentors, and complete a written thesis together with required graduate coursework. The program is completed on a full-time basis with a nominal length of two years. Admission is offered for the January, May and September terms. The degree is administered by McMaster University's Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology, which supports research across the full range of modern chemical science disciplines and provides access to shared analytical and research instrumentation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants need a four-year bachelor's degree from a recognized university or college with at least a B+ average (equivalent to a McMaster GPA of 8.5 out of 12) in the final year of study, in courses relevant to the discipline of the proposed graduate work. A three-year degree meeting the Bologna Accord's European Higher Education Area framework is accepted in place of a four-year degree, with a Diploma Supplement attached to the transcript. Strong letters of recommendation are required, along with official transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended. Admission is competitive: meeting the minimum average does not guarantee a place, and the Graduate Admissions and Studies Committee of the relevant Faculty makes the final decision. Applicants whose primary language is not English, and who have not completed a degree taught in English, must submit an IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall (minimum 5.5 in each band) or a TOEFL iBT score of at least 92.
