The Mechanical Engineering PhD at McMaster University is a thesis-based doctoral program in the Faculty of Engineering, covering the application of physics to the analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical systems. Faculty research spans four areas: biomechanics, including mechanics of biological tissue and skeletal movement; manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, casting and robotics; mechanics and design, covering automotive applications, control systems and mechatronics; and thermo-fluid sciences, including combustion, heat transfer and multi-phase flow. All PhD students are supervised by a faculty member from the department and work toward a dissertation demonstrating independent research. Admission requires an honours Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree, both in a related engineering or science field, with a minimum B+ average in graduate coursework related to the proposed program of study. International applicants from countries where English is not an official language must meet a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL score of 88. The program is completed in four years of full-time study, or up to eight years part-time, with a typical intake each September.
