Memorial University of Newfoundland offers BA/BS in Earth Sciences, a bachelor's degree in Earth Sciences & Geology programme in St. John's, Canada. The programme runs for 4 years. Tuition for international students is CAD 22,500 per year (CAD 6,750 per year for local students).
This four-year Bachelor of Science program in Earth Sciences, based on Memorial University's St. John's campus, covers the structure and development of the planet, from rock and soil composition to plate tectonics and subsurface materials. Teaching combines fieldwork with modern tools such as satellite imagery, geochemical instruments, and advanced microscopy. As with several Science majors at Memorial, students complete foundational first-year coursework in mathematics, chemistry, physics, and Earth sciences before formally declaring the major rather than doing so at admission. An honours option is available, along with four specialization streams: applied geophysics, environmental geoscience, petrology/tectonics/economic geology, and sedimentary basins, plus joint honours combinations with biology, chemistry, geography, or physics. The department is described as one of the largest and most diverse of its kind in Canada, with industry recruiters visiting regularly. It suits students interested in geology, geophysics, or environmental earth science who want a fieldwork-based education, and is oriented toward careers such as environmental geoscientist, mineralogist, or paleontologist, alongside further academic study.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:55.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Earth Sciences cannot be declared as a major at the time of application: students first enter Memorial's Faculty of Science with a Bachelor of Science under the university's general admission requirements, which also call for appropriate senior high-school courses in mathematics and a laboratory science. Admission to the major requires completion of one three-credit-hour course each in English, mathematics, chemistry, physics and Earth Sciences, with a minimum grade of 55% in both Earth Sciences 1000 and 1002 before proceeding to second-year courses. No program-specific English test scores are published; applicants whose first language is not English follow Memorial's general proficiency requirements (e.g. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, TOEFL iBT 4.5 overall). University applications are rolling, with priority deadlines of March 1 (Fall), October 1 (Winter) and February 1 (Spring).
Application Details
Start Date:September, January and May
Application Deadline:Memorial University's undergraduate application system opens one year ahead of each semester for the 2027 cycle: for Fall 2027 entry the portal opens 10 September 2026, the priority deadline (also the early-entrance-scholarship deadline) is 1 March 2027, the document deadline is 20 August 2027, and applications finally close 9 September 2027; Winter 2027 entry has a priority deadline of 1 October 2026 and closes 6 January 2027; Spring 2027 entry closes 11 May 2027 with a priority date of 1 February 2027. International applicants use the same direct application to Memorial and are only advised to apply at least 12 weeks before their intended semester starts; no fixed international closing date is published. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
