Overview

Coursework spans cytogenetic and molecular genetic techniques: the cytogenetics component covers the microscopic analysis of human chromosomes, while the molecular genetics component covers the analysis of DNA and RNA. Students build the knowledge and skills to perform analyses used to diagnose and treat genetic diseases, to monitor and prevent disease, and to use laboratory techniques and instrumentation in studying the genetics of the human cell. Graduates can sit the CAMLPR national certification exam, with competencies recognised in both cytogenetics and molecular genetics.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 3.00 / 4.0

Admission Requirements: Requires a Bachelor of Science degree (minimum CGPA 3.0) with a minimum 70% (B-) in one semester-length Human Genetics course and one semester-length Molecular Genetics course (each 0.5 credit) completed within the last 10 years at the university level — or the same courses plus Canadian Medical Laboratory Technologist certification. CASPer is mandatory; admission weighs academic achievement/CGPA (35%), professional and academic experience (20%), and CASPer result (45%).
