Overview
Michener’s Anesthesia Assistant program teaches students how to evaluate the pre, peri and postoperative patient, how to perform procedural sedation and how to manage special anesthetic considerations. The program is delivered over three (3) semesters. Curriculum for the program is currently under review and will be updated shortly. The Anesthesia Assistant program is accredited by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CRST). Accreditation is a quality improvement process that ensures educational programs meet national standards and that students acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies for safe and effective care at entry to practice.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Michener's Anesthesia Assistant program requires current registration as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (CRTO) or Registered Nurse (CNO). Respiratory Therapists need one year of student experience plus one year of full-time work (over 4,000 hours) in critical care/ICU within the past four years; Registered Nurses need two years full-time-equivalent (over 4,000 hours) in critical care/ICU in the same window, in each case covering airway management, mechanical ventilation, vascular access, ECG reading, pharmacological therapies and hemodynamic monitoring. Applicants submit proof of licensure, documented clinical experience, a completed Applicant Experience Checklist, transcripts sent directly from their institution, and a letter from their Chief of Anesthesia supporting their return to their home site. The program page states no academic-course prerequisite and no English test score of its own; Michener's institution-wide English Language Requirements set IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.0 per band, TOEFL iBT 100 overall with 22 in Writing/Speaking, or PTE Academic 65 overall with no skill under 60, for applicants who must demonstrate English proficiency.
