Overview
The Medical Laboratory Science program at Michener combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on skills development. As part of UHN, Michener’s students have access to instructors with clinical expertise and learn on the latest equipment. Didactic learning includes theory and laboratory analysis in five disciplines as well as specimen procurement, including Phlebotomy. In the simulated clinical lab setting, students work both independently and in teams to develop their professional communication, problem solving and critical thinking skills. In their final year, students participate in a 20-week clinical placement under the supervision of medical laboratory technologists. This placement provides the opportunity to integrate knowledge and skills into practice, gain hands-on experience in work environments and network with potential employers. Graduates are eligible to write the national certification examinations conducted by the Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR). Certification qualifies the graduate for registration with the provincial colleges, including the College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Ontario (CMLTO), which is a requirement to practice in Ontario. The Medical Laboratory Science program is accredited by Accreditation Canada. Accreditation is a quality improvement process that ensures educational programs meet national standards and that students acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies for safe and effective care at entry to practice.
