Overview

Salaries vary according to experience, education, type of setting, and geographic location. Our provincial professional association Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO) completed a Salary Survey Report in 2018. According to this report, TRO members with less than two years of experience reported salaries of just over $40,000 per year. On average, TRO members with a Recreation Therapy college diploma were earning a little over $60,000 per year. Interestingly, TRO member’s average salaries for those working in Southwestern Ontario were amongst some of the highest in the province.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants need an OSSD or equivalent, including English at the Grade 12 (C/U) level; Leadership and Peer Support (Grade 11 O), Dynamics of Human Relationships (Grade 11 O), Human Development Throughout the Lifespan (Grade 12 C/U), Challenge and Change in Society (Grade 12 U), Recreation and Healthy Active Living (Grade 12 C/U), and related volunteer or co-op experience are recommended but not required. Admitted students must be 18+ to obtain a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening under 6 months old, complete a Communicable Disease Surveillance form before the programme starts, and arrange their own transportation for placements and field projects. International applicants submit official, translated secondary or post-secondary transcripts and proof of graduation, plus proof of English proficiency; the programme page defers to Niagara's general international admission page for the diploma/certificate English bar of IELTS Academic 6.0 overall (no band under 5.5), TOEFL iBT 80 (minimum 20 in Writing and Speaking), Duolingo English Test 105+ (no subscore under 95), PTE Academic 58+ (no skill under 53), Cambridge English 169 (no skill under 162), or CAEL 60 (no band under 50).

Application Details

Application Deadline: Niagara College's equal-consideration deadlines apply equally to domestic and international applicants to competitive programs, published for the 2026-2027 cycle: for September 2026 entry the date was 1 February 2026, for January 2027 entry it is 5 June 2026, and for May 2027 entry it is 30 October 2026, each followed roughly three weeks later by a document deadline and an earliest-offer date. All other programs, the majority, are processed first-come, first-served starting each November for both domestic and international applicants, with offers issued until seats fill or the term begins. Niagara does not publish which named programs currently hold competitive status. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
