The Teacher of Indigenous Language as a Second Language (TILSL) programme prepares candidates to teach an Indigenous language to students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in Ontario schools. Students develop proficient fluency in one of Anishnaabemwin, Cree, Lunaape, Mohawk, or Cayuga alongside culturally based teaching strategies for delivering Indigenous language instruction. The programme combines three on-site summer sessions at Nipissing University's North Bay campus with online coursework during the fall, winter, and spring terms, plus three in-school teaching internships. Candidates who already hold an undergraduate degree graduate with a Bachelor of Education; those without a prior degree receive a diploma, which can be converted to a Bachelor of Education if an undergraduate degree is completed within ten years. The programme admits students in May and is designed for Indigenous language speakers who want to bring their language into the classroom as a credentialed teaching qualification.
