Overview
The Indigenous Teacher Education Program (ITEP) is a three-year degree/diploma program for individuals of Indigenous ancestry, preparing graduates to develop culturally relevant teaching strategies that deliver curriculum within an Indigenous worldview. The program combines an on-campus summer session each July with one online course per semester during the fall, winter, and spring, allowing students to study while remaining in their home communities for most of the year. Admission requires proof of Indigenous ancestry and successful completion of one of several pathways with a minimum overall average of 60% or equivalent: 18 credits at an accredited university, one year at an accredited college, or one year of full-time study at an Indigenous post-secondary institute. The single intake is in May. Graduates receive a Certificate of Qualification from the Ontario College of Teachers in the Primary/Junior Divisions, qualifying them to teach in Ontario schools.
