Welder Foundation Certificate - Harmonized is a foundation in Trades programme taught at North Island College in Courtenay, Canada. The programme runs for 28 weeks, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 2,600 per total for local students.
This certificate delivers combined Level 1 and Level 2 apprenticeship technical training as a foundation program for students entering welding without an employer sponsor. It runs full-time and in-person over 28 weeks at the Campbell River campus with a winter intake, and on completion grants 300 work-based hours plus technical-training credit toward the Red Seal pathway once a student registers as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC. Graduates also gain access to welding tests through NIC's authorized Boiler Branch testing stations. The curriculum covers a range of welding techniques, layout and fabrication skills, basic metallurgy and drawing for welding, and occupational safety practices. Because it requires no sponsoring employer, the program suits domestic students seeking an entry-level route into industrial manufacturing, welding and fabrication work, with priority admission for Indigenous applicants. It is intended as a foundation credential rather than full trade certification, with students expected to register as apprentices afterward to continue toward Red Seal certified welder status and the career opportunities that follow in sectors such as forestry, aquaculture, oil and gas, manufacturing and construction.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires C in English 10 (or equivalent, or a successful English assessment) and C in Math 10 (or equivalent, or a successful trades math assessment), or successful completion of NIC's FSK 030 upgrading course in place of both. High-school graduation is preferred but not required where the stated prerequisites are otherwise met. Once accepted, and before the end of the programme's first month, students must hold and submit a current WHMIS certificate valid through to the end of the programme. The certificate is domestic-applicants-only, runs a single 28-week Winter intake out of Campbell River, and sets no minimum-GPA, portfolio or interview requirement.
