Trades - Apprenticeship in Carpentry: Apprenticeship - Harmonized at North Island College in Courtenay, Canada is a trades - apprenticeship in Trades programme. The programme runs for 7 weeks, delivered on campus. Teaching is in English. Tuition is CAD 800 per total for local students.
This program provides the in-school technical-training levels of the Red Seal carpentry apprenticeship for students already sponsored by an employer registered with SkilledTradesBC. It is structured as four levels of full-time, in-person instruction at the Comox Valley campus, each running seven weeks, with multiple level-specific intakes scheduled across the 2026-2028 academic years to fit apprentices' work schedules. As with other harmonized trades pathways, training combines these classroom blocks with on-the-job experience, generally split around 80 percent worksite practice under a certified tradesperson and 20 percent in-class technical instruction. Coursework addresses site layout, framing and finishing work across residential, commercial and industrial settings, preparing apprentices for the Interprovincial Red Seal carpentry exam. The program is open to domestic applicants only and assumes the student is already employed and sponsored in the trade rather than seeking first entry. It suits apprentices working toward journeyperson status as a Red Seal certified carpenter, progressing level by level through the technical-training requirement while accumulating paid workplace hours toward full certification.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission is restricted to registered apprentices: applicants must be registered as an apprentice with SkilledTradesBC and be employed by a company with at least one qualified journeyperson able to supervise their training. NIC's calendar sets no separate academic grade, language-test score, minimum GPA, portfolio or interview requirement beyond this sponsorship, since technical-training levels build on the apprentice's existing indenture. The certificate offers Fall, Winter and Spring intakes and is domestic applicants only. Applicants who previously applied within the last year and want a subsequent level use NIC's Apprentice Training Registration Form rather than a fresh application.
