Overview
This program, offered through the Faculty of Trades and Technology, provides modular technical training for sponsored welding apprentices working toward SkilledTradesBC Level 1 and Level 2 credit. It comprises two components — Welder Level B, a 16-week block, and Welder Level A, an 8-week block — both delivered full-time and in-person at the Campbell River and Port Alberni campuses, with flexible start dates running from September through January for Level B and into March for Level A. Successful completion contributes 300 work-based hours plus technical-training credit for Levels 1 and 2 toward the apprentice's Red Seal requirements and leads toward a Certificate of Qualification tied to the Red Seal exam. Level B covers core welding techniques, layout and fabrication, and basic metallurgy and drawing for welding, while Level A builds on this with more advanced metallurgy content. The program requires sponsorship by an employer registered with SkilledTradesBC and combines this in-class training with on-the-job learning. It is limited to domestic applicants and suits welding apprentices needing to complete their early-level technical training on a schedule that fits around their employment.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry to Level B requires successful completion of Welding Level C or the Foundation certificate, plus SkilledTradesBC-prescribed work-based hours under OPSN 2015-029 (recommended at 1,000). Entry to Level A requires successful completion of Level B, plus a minimum of 1,950 work-based hours under the same SkilledTradesBC standard. High-school graduation is preferred at both levels but not required once the stated prerequisites are otherwise met. NIC's calendar sets no language-test score, minimum GPA, portfolio or interview requirement for either level. The 2026-27 Campbell River intake runs on a rolling start between September 8 and January 26, and the programme is domestic applicants only.
