Program details

Overview

Survey Technician at Nova Scotia Community College is a one-year certificate program that introduces students to measuring spatial data, including height, distance, angles, and coordinates, and using that data to define and map the physical world. Students spend up to half of their class time in the field, working in teams with instruments such as levels, total stations, and satellite-based positioning systems, and learn to process, analyze, and present data using surveying software, computer-aided drafting, and geographic information systems. Instruction takes place at NSCC's Centre of Geographic Sciences (COGS), a dedicated geomatics-focused campus, and the program is accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada. A mandatory field experience course of about five weeks gives students practical exposure outside the classroom, and the program is eligible for a co-op placement after year one for students accepted into the Geomatics Engineering Technology program. The program begins each September; graduates are not eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.
