The Certificate in Geomatics: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing covers the collection, management and communication of geographically referenced information, combining geographical information science, GIS, remote sensing, photogrammetry and global positioning systems. Students gain hands-on training in spatial analysis, topographical surveying, geospatial database development, cartographic communication and project planning and management, including field-based data collection. Offered by the Faculty of Environmental & Urban Change, the certificate requires 24 credits: at least 15 credits in required geography courses covering geomatics, GIS fundamentals, remote sensing and spatial analysis, plus at least 9 elective credits, six of which must be at the 3000 or 4000 level. It typically takes two to three years to complete and can be pursued through direct entry after an undergraduate degree or concurrently with a York bachelor's or honours degree. Study sessions begin in the Fall term, and students may enrol full-time or part-time.
