Truck and Transport Repair is a two-year diploma program at Nova Scotia Community College that develops the skills and knowledge to diagnose, repair and service on-highway commercial vehicles, including trucks, buses, trailers and emergency vehicles. Students gain a working knowledge of fundamental shop skills, tires and rims, braking systems, hydraulics, welding, powertrains, engines and electrical and electronic systems used in heavy-duty vehicles. Instruction combines classroom theory with hands-on practice using specialized tools and equipment in a shop environment, and the program requires a minimum 90 per cent attendance rate. The curriculum includes a mandatory unpaid field placement of approximately five weeks, with co-op options available. Truck and Transport Mechanic is a compulsory trade in Nova Scotia, so graduates must register as apprentices to continue toward certification. Graduates are prepared for careers as truck and transport mechanics with fleet operators, dealerships and repair shops. The program begins in September.
