The Visual Arts Certificate for Teachers is a post-baccalaureate, 30-credit program at NSCAD University for both art-specialist and non-specialist teachers, nominally completed in one year and required to be finished within five years. Art specialists build on existing studio training and pedagogical practice while deepening art-historical knowledge; non-specialists gain foundational art-making experience and an understanding of visual art in contemporary culture. The program draws coursework from liberal arts, art education, and studio practice. It meets Nova Scotia's requirements for one level of Advanced Teacher Certification and is approved by the Nova Scotia Department of Education and the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission. Admission requires an existing bachelor's degree and Bachelor of Education, plus at least one year of related teaching experience. Requirements
Admission Requirements: Art specialists must hold a recognized Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (or equivalent) and a Bachelor of Education degree with visual arts as a first teachable subject, along with at least one full year of visual arts teaching experience in a public or approved private school. Non-specialists must hold a recognized bachelor's degree and a Bachelor of Education degree, with at least one full year of teaching experience at the elementary or secondary level. All applicants must hold eligibility for the Initial Teachers Certificate and submit official transcripts, a copy of their teaching certificate, a principal's letter of reference, a current resume, and a one-page personal statement, along with a $75 USD application fee.
