Overview

The English Language Certificate offers you the opportunity to improve your general English skills. The English Language Certificate (ELC) is a four level program. The goal of this program is to develop general language skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Full time students take 20 hours of classes per week. There are classes for listening and speaking (ELLS) 10 hours per week, reading and writing (ELRW) 10 hours per week, reading (ELR) 5 hours per week, and writing (ELW) 5 hours per week.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Admission is by English-language placement rather than academic credential. Applicants are placed into Level 1 through Level 4 using OCELA, IELTS or Duolingo scores Okanagan College publishes: Level 1 is an OCELA Level 1 placement, an overall IELTS below 3.5, or a Duolingo score below 45; Level 2 is OCELA Level 2, IELTS 3.5, or Duolingo 45-50; Level 3 is OCELA Level 3, IELTS 4.0, or Duolingo 55-60; Level 4 is OCELA Level 4, IELTS 4.5, Duolingo 65-70, or a TOEFL iBT score of 52-59. Students who place below Level 1 may begin the certificate at Semester One. At least 50% of the program's coursework must be completed through Okanagan College. No secondary-school grades, portfolio, interview or other condition is stated on the program page.

Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC (a $30 CAD fee): Okanagan College sets no fixed closing date for most programmes in the 2026-27/2027-28 cycle. Applications for a Fall intake open at 8:30 a.m. on October's first business day of the preceding year, and for a Winter intake at 8:30 a.m. on February's first business day of the preceding year (exceptions apply); Practical Nursing's January intake opens at 9:00 a.m. on April's first business day of the preceding year. Most programmes accept applications until seats fill, though Nursing and Dental programmes set their own fixed or ranked deadlines on their own pages. International applicants also apply through EducationPlannerBC, paying a $100 CAD per-programme fee; the College publishes no institution-wide international closing date and directs applicants to each programme's own page. Admission is otherwise rolling. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
