Program details

Overview

This Basic English as a Second Language Certificate offers you the chance to upgrade your English skills if it is your second language. The program offers eight levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) training, where you’ll become more confident listening, speaking, reading and writing English. This is an opportunity to engage with a multicultural student population, authentic language practice, Canadian culture experience, and electives to support the required courses. Emphasis is on the development of speaking and listening skills with an introduction to reading comprehension and written composition.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Camosun sets no fixed entry grades for this certificate. Applicants either meet the prerequisites of the individual ESL courses that make up the programme, or, where they do not, complete Camosun's English Language Placement Assessment, which places them at the appropriate starting level; the college publishes no separate IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Duolingo or CAEL cut-off for this programme, since the placement assessment itself determines the entry point. Applicants who are missing individual course prerequisites can instead book an assessment or take an upgrading course before starting. The certificate runs five intakes a year: September, October, January, March and May. Camosun directs prospective students to an Admissions Advisor or the How to Apply pages to confirm which start date and level suits them.

Application Details

Start Date: September, October, January, March and May
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC for Camosun's open-enrolment programmes: for Fall 2027 (September) applications open 1 October 2026 with an early deadline of 15 May 2027 for priority registration and a late deadline of 26 August 2027; Winter 2027 (January) runs 15 September 2026 to 7 January 2027, and Summer 2027 (May) 15 January 2027 to 29 April 2027. Limited-enrolment programmes publish only an opening date and can close once the waitlist exceeds the seats on offer. International applicants must submit a complete application by 1 June (Fall), 1 October (Winter) or 1 February (Summer), though later applications are still reviewed while seats remain, making admission effectively rolling for both groups once the early deadlines pass. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
