Overview

Welder Modular Training is Okanagan College's self-paced route into the welding trade for welders who are not registered as apprentices with SkilledTradesBC and instead track their work-based hours in a Welder Logbook. The pathway is organized into three sequential stages — the Welder Foundation level (28 weeks), Level B (16 weeks), and Level A (8 weeks) — delivered at the Kelowna Trades Complex with day or afternoon/evening scheduling options. Entry into Level B requires a minimum of 1,000 logged work-based hours in the Welder Logbook. After completing Level B, students can write the inter-provincial exam to attain Red Seal certification in welding, while Level A adds a further ticket in specialized metal welding. Curriculum across the modular levels covers shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, weld quality control, welding codes and standards, blueprint reading, and welding metallurgy. The program suits welders building trade hours outside formal apprenticeship registration; those already registered with SkilledTradesBC are directed instead to the Welder Apprenticeship program.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This modular program builds on the Welder Foundation credential rather than admitting directly from secondary school. Entry to Level B requires successful completion of a Welder Foundation program together with a minimum of 1,000 work-based hours recorded in the applicant's Welder Log Book; entry to Level A requires the applicant to already hold Red Seal welder certification. Okanagan College does not publish a minimum grade, an English-language test score, or an age requirement for this program, and notes that students already registered as apprentices should instead apply through the separate Welder Apprenticeship stream. The program is offered to domestic students only. Intakes begin October 26, 2026, with further sessions scheduled through 2027.
