Program details
Overview
This online certificate builds an interdisciplinary understanding of the causes and impacts of climate change alongside practical skills for identifying and acting on climate challenges, locally and globally. Billed as the first program of its kind in Canada, it opens by examining current science and policy innovations before a capstone placement lets students apply that learning to a real challenge with a government, civil-society, Indigenous, or community organization. The certificate is offered in partnership with the Environmental Careers Organization of Canada (ECO Canada), and its content reflects ECO Canada's National Occupational Standard, informing the skills and competencies required for the Environmental Professional in-training designation. Students can complete the certificate as a stand-alone credential or take its courses as electives toward several other Royal Roads programs, including the MA and MSc in Environmental Practice, the MA in Environmental Education and Communication, the MA and MSc in Environment and Management, the MA in Interdisciplinary Studies, and the MBA in Executive Management.
Requirements
Minimum GPA:3.00 / 4.33
Admission Requirements: Standard admission requires completion of a four-year (or comparable) undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with a minimum GPA of 'B' (3.00/4.33), plus at least two years of relevant work or volunteer experience; applicants who meet the degree but not the GPA requirement normally complete Academic Writing and Critical Thinking first. Flexible admission normally requires six years of relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, with the same writing-course condition. The programme page defers to Royal Roads University's institution-wide English language requirement for applicants whose first language is not English or who were not educated in English: for third-year-entry and graduate programs, IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with a minimum 6.5 in writing and speaking and 6.0 in listening and reading, or TOEFL iBT 88 overall with a minimum 24 in writing and 20 in listening, reading and speaking. Applicants also submit a personal statement, a detailed résumé, official transcripts and at least two reference letters.
Application Details
Start Date:January
Application Deadline:Royal Roads University sets no single university-wide deadline: domestic and international applicants apply directly to the university through the same process, and every programme page checked shows one identical deadline for both. RRU consistently closes a programme's application exactly three calendar months before that programme's own intake start date — a September 2027 intake typically closes 7 June 2027 — though a few programmes (the Master of Global Management, for example) use a six-month lead instead. Each programme lists its own upcoming intakes, running from 2026 into 2028 depending on the programme, and RRU says it may still accept a late application if space and processing time remain, but it publishes no separate international deadline and no institution-wide equal-consideration or rolling policy. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
