Trades - Apprenticeship in Electrician

This apprenticeship program leads to Red Seal-endorsed journeyperson certification in the electrician trade, delivered in person at SAIT's Main Campus over four one-year periods. Each apprenticeship year combines a required minimum of on-the-job training hours (1,560 hours in years one and two, 1,500 hours in years three and four) with a block of classroom instruction (8 weeks in the first two years, 10 weeks in the final two), and some intakes offer blended delivery that pairs on-campus lab work with online coursework. Technical content advances progressively: year one covers DC circuits, safety, tools, and basic electrical systems; year two moves into single-phase AC circuits and motor control; year three covers three-phase AC power, motors, and transformers; and year four addresses control circuits, programmable logic, and fire alarm systems. Students must maintain at least 50% in each course and a 65% overall average to progress. The program suits self-motivated, detail-oriented candidates with reasonable math skills, mechanical aptitude, and the ability to distinguish wire colours, who are comfortable working independently or in a crew. Graduates work across residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial electrical systems, and the Red Seal endorsement allows certified electricians to work anywhere in Canada. Because this apprenticeship requires employer sponsorship and Alberta residency or citizenship, international applicants are not accepted.
