Trades - Apprenticeship in Steamfitter Pipefitter

This apprenticeship leads to journeyperson status and an advanced diploma, delivered in person at SAIT's Main Campus over four one-year periods, with blended delivery options available at some intakes. Each period combines a minimum of 1,560 hours of on-the-job training with eight weeks of classroom instruction, and the technical content builds progressively: year one covers safety, tools, materials, and metal fabrication; year two introduces heating systems, specialty piping, and gas fitting fundamentals; year three covers steam systems, instrumentation, and welding processes; and year four addresses high-pressure systems, process piping, and advanced planning. The program suits candidates who enjoy hands-on, physically demanding work and are comfortable working independently, with problem-solving ability and mechanical aptitude as key traits. Graduates lay out, assemble, maintain, and repair piping systems that carry water, steam, chemicals, or fuel, primarily within industrial and commercial settings. The Red Seal endorsement lets certified steamfitter-pipefitters work across Canada. As with SAIT's other apprenticeship trades, applicants must be Alberta residents and Canadian citizens or permanent residents with valid work authorization, and registration as an apprentice requires a sponsoring employer before classroom instruction begins.
