Overview

Chemical Laboratory Technician is a two-year Ontario College Diploma at Sheridan College that develops specialized, marketable skills in chemical analysis. Students study instrumental analysis, microbiology, organic and inorganic chemistry, laboratory techniques and environmental science, working with the sophisticated instrumentation used in research and industry. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on laboratory experience, giving graduates practical competence in chemical testing and analysis used across environmental services, energy, health care and other sectors that rely on chemical analysis and research. Coursework begins with organic and inorganic chemistry, calculus and advanced science. Graduate duties can include analyzing samples, preparing samples and solutions, and technical sales for laboratory equipment and supplies; some graduates continue to university degrees in chemistry-related fields. Credits transfer into Sheridan's Chemical Engineering Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology - Environmental, or Environmental Technician programs. Courses are taught at Sheridan's Davis Campus in Brampton.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent including one English, Grade 12 (ENG4C or ENG4U), one Chemistry, Grade 11 (U) or Grade 12 (C), and one Math, Grade 12 (U) or Math Grade 12 Mathematics for College Technology (MCT4C) or Math Grade 11 Functions (MCR3U) or Functions and Applications (MCF3M). Applicants aged 19 or older who lack the prerequisites may apply as mature students. Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements may be invited to complete pre-admission tests in mathematics and English, with a minimum grade of 60% required on both to be considered for admission. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Sheridan's institution-wide English Proficiency Requirement for certificate and diploma programs: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 (no band below 5.5), TOEFL iBT overall 80 (no section below 20), PTE Academic overall 58 (no section below 49), or Duolingo English Test overall 105 (no sub-score below 85).
