Overview
The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Art, Performance, and Cinema Studies explores the fine and performing arts, with a focus on visual culture. You’ll start with a history of the arts and move on through critical theory, thematic topics or curating. You'll investigate art and culture with attention to the historically changing forms of class, gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality and aesthetics. Additionally, you will partake in two introductory studio courses from a multidisciplinary range of choices; these provide the experience of the creative process in dance, music, theatre, video or visual art. This degree will prepare you for a variety of jobs in the arts, film, or a graduate degree.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Direct-entry applicants from B.C. high schools must complete a minimum of five approved Grade 12 courses, including English Studies 12 (or English First Peoples 12) at 70% or higher, and must hold a minimum grade of 70% in Language Arts 11, English 12, or equivalent; no further program-specific Grade 11/12 subject list or minimum admission average is published. Unlike most School for the Contemporary Arts programs, Art, Performance and Cinema Studies applicants are explicitly exempt from the supplemental application (audition, interview or portfolio) that other Contemporary Arts programs require. Applicants must also meet SFU's university-wide English language requirement: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT overall 88 with no section below 20, PTE Academic overall 65 with a minimum of 60 in each Communicative Skill, or Duolingo English Test overall 125.

Spring 2027 entry runs 1 July to 15 September 2026, and Summer 2027 entry runs 1 December 2026 to 15 January 2027. Admission documents are generally due 28 February 2027 (Fall) and offers must be accepted by 1 May. International applicants use the same EducationPlannerBC dates and portal; SFU publishes no separate international deadline. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
